Green Schools dominate NCAA

Just a fun new way to look at the brackets.

Hero: Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf

Some eighteen years ago, I had a cab driver from Liberia. I will never forget him. In the short half hour we talked, he made a lasting impression on me. He told me how lucky American students are. “Each has their own text book,” he said. “In my country, we share one outdated book among twenty students. There’s no excuse here to not be educated.” He was right of course that we’re incredibly blessed and if only we could step outside of our own spoiledness, we might have the fortune to appreciate all that we have. For all our troubles, our lives can’t compare with the heartbreak brought about by war and corruption that citizens of other countries struggle against daily.

Independent Lens did a show on Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf, Africa’s first elected female head of state and Liberia’s first elected female president. She is known as the “Iron Lady” for her determination and strength in working to make Liberia an example to other African nations. She inherited a country rife with corruption and a broken infrastructure and economy with an 85% umemployment rate. Along with eradicating corruption, she has received debt forgiveness from the U.S. and instituted compulsory, free, primary education.

Most importantly, despite the numerous obstacles she faces, President Johnson-Sirleaf never gives up on her dream of re-creating Libera.

Cynicism never cures what ails us. It’s easy to give up, but it takes a special courage to keep fighting for what’s right even when it seems hopeless. At the end of our days, it would be great to know that the world was made better by us being in it.

Next Wednesday is American Idol Gives Back week. Please consider donating money. It’s a lot easier than joining the Peace Corps.

We’re All Going to Die

It’s been a long time since I had an edition of “We’re all going to die.” What with the upcoming elections, the working electronics in my home, attending Opening Day, I’ve barely had interest in the subject. Being a selfless person however, I set aside my own joy to take care of you, my readers, who I know so look forward to these posts.

It took a bit of work, but I was finally able to turn up a couple of ideas which I hope will strike the appropriate terror in your heart. It’s really not much, but the best I can do at the moment.

  • MRSA has entered the food chain.
  • Another pandemic is imminent.
  • The earth is toast.
  • Plastics are disrupting our hormones and feminizing men. Recent study shows exceptionally toxic levels in Danny Noriega, also known as, “The Torch.”
  • It’s best to live upstream.

  • Don’t get too content. Another edition of how to solve world peace is underway.
